Yesterday we took a ride out to Bovingdon to deliver a box of 'Quality Tat' to Rose & Tony for the Castledon Boot Sale next week. They very kindly invited us to stay for lunch but we were a bit concerned about Polo - when he's somewhere that he's unsure of we have trouble just getting him out of the van As we have a tailgate guard in our dogmobile, it was arranged that we could reverse it down Rose & Tony's drive and leave Polo in there with the door open for him. That way we could keep an eye on him whilst we went in. However, we needn't have worried! As soon as we got there Polo was waiting by the door with Elsa and got straight out! He trotted through the back gate with Elsa, where he greeted his sister Mia with a sniff. Good old Tink made an appearance, too - eventually, lol! Yet again, he totally amazed us - he spent the afternoon going in and out of the house and garden and even took treats from Rose & Tony! Just before we were about to leave, he went up to Mia with his tail wagging nineteen to the dozen - I think he'd finally remembered who she was! We honestly didn't expect Polo to get out of the van, let alone relax and enjoy a lovely afternoon with the rest of us! We didn't even take our camera, thinking that we'd have to leave sharpish to save leaving Polo on his own in the van for too long! Tony took some good photos - hopefully he'll post some here for you all to see It was a right 'family gathering' as Elsa also met up with her sister, Honey who lives across the road from Mr Tink and Miss Mia. Thank you to Rose & Tony for a lovely afternoon - enjoy your Boot Sale on Saturday, Tony, lol!

Thought we'd share Polo's latest 'first' with you all..... Today we went to visit our good friend Joan, who has just moved into a flat in a very posh retirement complex. Me and Dale been to see her during the week to help her unpack and sort out her bills etc but we left the dogs at home as we assumed that they wouldn't be allowed in the building. However, we met the on-site Warden who said that dogs were actually allowed in the building But there was a problem. Joan's flat is on the first floor and Polo doesn't do stairs So, we decided that Dale would have to carry him up one flight of stairs if he wouldn't follow Elsa. We got to the bottom of the stairs and as expected, Polo didn't want to know - and neither did Elsa who was being a complete diva! So, Dale had to carry Polo and I had to carry Elsa ! (made me realise just how unfit I must be when I was completely out of breath when I got to the top, lol!) We had a lovely afternoon with Joan and her son, Nick but we still had the problem of getting Polo & Elsa back down the stairs. Not wanting to have to repeat carrying 30kg+ of greyhound each down the stairs, ( - especially after a few beers, lol!) we decided that we'd throw caution to the wind and try going in the lift. We fully expected Polo to refuse to go in it, but in he and Elsa trotted, totally unfazed! Result! No more power-lifting greyhounds up the stairs! Polo, you never cease to amaze us, you lovely boy!

Polo never stops surprising us all. What a brave chap he is turning out to be in certain aspects of life. It really does go to show - as we keep saying on this post - how if you give a nervous lad like Polo a chance who knows what they can go on to achieve. You and Dale should be very proud of yourselves for giving Polo the confidence and reassurance he needs to keep trying - and achieving - new things. Well done to you all and also to Elsa for setting a good(ish) example.
I also had a "stairs experience" with Polo's sister, Mia, this weekend and will post that separately.

Another little step to share with you from Chez Polo..... After much encouragement and by finally resorting to bribery, Polo now gives his paw in return for a treat! ( - Only thing is, he now weighs 45kg, lol!) Just out of curiosity, which paw does your dog give, left or right? I only ask because every greyhound that we've ever owned has always offered their left paw - is it a greyhound thing?

Harley doesn't give his paw. He's probably saying "let's just get on with the treat". However, when being fussed and I stop, he taps my lower leg using his left paw, insisting that I carry on the fussing.

Polo's Vet visit.......Polo has had a sore paw for a while - the webbing between his front right paw has been red and sometimes has sores on it
He very occasionally licks at it but apart from it looking sore it hasn't really bothered him.
Jodie had a look at it and advised soaking it in Hibiscrub and putting Sudocrem between his toes. Although this helped, the redness was still there and after a long walk wallowing
through muddy fields it got quite bad again So, I very hesitantly phoned our local vets who gave us a 4.30 appointment with a new vet, Tom. I explained how very nervous Polo was and they were fine with us taking him through the back door, avoiding the scary people in the waiting room. One problem though - Polo has taken to refusing to get out of the van if he's not 100% sure of his surroundings..... And 33kg of greyhound that doesn't want to come out WON'T be moved, no matter how hard we try! Sooooo....the plan was hatched that I should walk him and Elsa to the vets and Dale would meet us there in the van so that we didn't have to walk back! After a 40 minute route march, we arrived at the vets, popped Elsa back in the awaiting van and took Polo in through the tradesmen's entrance ( - well, I say 'took' but Dale had to pick him up and carry him in, lol!) After his initial fright at being in a room with a strange man, Polo amazed us (again!) and actually laid down while we chatted about him! It turns out he's got a yeast infection between his toes, caused by the constant damp conditions. Tom prescribed Malaseb shampoo, which we have to massage into his paws and leave on for 10 minutes, once a week. Hopefully this will clear it up, as will the drier weather (which is hopefully on the way!) Both Elsa & Polo are zonked out after their hike to the vets - it didn't affect his appetite as he woolfed his dinner down ( as per. usual!)
